Summertime is finally here! Are you ready for warmer weather and days filled with fun in the sun? Whether you’re planning to hit the road for a family vacation or soak up some rays by the poolside, something you should be mindful of this summer is your oral health! Summer vacation doesn’t mean taking a vacation from personal hygiene—here are some tips from your dentist in Chardon to help you keep your smile bright and white all throughout the season.
1. Drink Plenty of Water
Water is the absolute best beverage for your whole body, including your mouth. Drinking it throughout the day helps to keep you hydrated while also stimulating the natural flow of saliva inside your mouth. This helps to wash away any excess plaque-causing bacteria that remains lingering around after you eat, and it also freshens your breath!
2. Pick Tap Water
There’s nothing wrong with bottled water, and it’s especially convenient when you’re out and about, but you should try to opt for tap water when you can. Tap water often has a naturally occurring mineral called fluoride added to it, which can strengthen your enamel and increase its resistance to tooth decay. Check to see if your city adds fluoride to its water supply; the benefits are well worth it!
3. Avoid Soda and Carbonated Drinks
It’s tempting to indulge in an ice-cold Coke or tall glass of lemonade during those hot summer days, but you should try to avoid these whenever possible, as well as other sodas and carbonated drinks. These items are often very sugary and acidic and can damage your tooth enamel when consumed frequently. They also usually contain staining agents that can discolor your teeth!
4. Use A Straw
Drinking your beverages through a straw can reduce the amount of contact between your teeth and potentially harmful drinks. If you can’t resist the urge to enjoy a soda, at least try to use a drinking straw; your teeth will thank you! Also try to finish your drinks quickly, rather than enjoying them slowly over time.
5. Try Tea
Some teas have health benefits; certain ones contain compounds that can effectively suppress bacteria! This can help to slow down the development of things like tooth decay and gum disease, which is something soda certainly can’t assist you with. Although be mindful of some teas that have sugary flavorings and staining agents added.
Don’t neglect your oral health this summer; life is more fun when you have a big, bright smile on your face! Following these five tips can ensure that your pearly whites are in good shape just in time for your summertime escapades.
